Vaccinations:
I think we can all agree that dogs and cats have unique talents for exploring their world. Sniffing, tasting and listening can be more effective than their human companion's eyesight, touching ability and thoughts! The drawback is that certain types of infections are more readily contracted through nose and tongue. Preventing infectious disease is one of our hospital's most critical functions, as some of these infections can cause human disease as well.
At the same time we recognize that not all pets share the same environment, eat the same foods or share same "genes" with its' neighbor. A 15 year old house cat is not exposed to the same dangers encountered by outdoor dogs and cats; however the 15 year old has other concerns that are just as important. We tailor a plan for each pet and its' individual needs to:
1. Minimize disease.
2. Minimize unnecessary intervention.
Radiology:
Medical imaging is an integral part of obtaining a complete and accurate diagnosis for many health problems.
At Maryland Avenue Pet Hospital we are excited to have the latest digital imaging equipment. This has allowed us to obtain superior quality radiographs and minimize "re-takes." We are then able to utilize telemedicine to consult with board certified radiologists within hours by transferring radiographs via the web.
Routine and Advanced Surgery:
Besides resolving problems, safety and comfort is what we strive for at Maryland Avenue Pet Hospital. Modern anesthetic drugs and quality surgical equipment are used to minimize risk. Maryland Avenue Pet Hospital's on-site laboratory support is critical. Blood testing is recommended and tailored to the procedure being performed, your pet's age, health status and breed.
Dentistry:
Besides bad breath, tooth loss and oral pain, infections of the mouth cause kidney, liver, heart and nervous system disease. The veterinarians at Maryland Avenue Pet Hospital thoroughly evaluate the oral cavity at least once yearly. Occasionally, a thorough cleaning under general anesthesia is needed. We have modern equipment and training that will optimize your pet's oral health. However, home maintenance by you, the pet owner, is the most important part of the equation.
Pain Management:
Nobody likes to see their pet in pain. However, the signs of pain are not always obvious. We like to predict potential pain levels of each procedure. Then, prevent pain before it occurs.
Dermatology:
Itchy skin always has an underlying cause that frequently gets overlooked. Ignoring the cause, or not looking for the cause, can result in permanent changes in the skin and fur quality. We always try to get to the root of skin disease so that we have the best chance of successful long-term treatment. When in doubt, we call in the specialist!
